On this day in history, May 17th, 1792, two dozen merchants and brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement, which established the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). In good weather, they operated under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street. In bad weather, they moved inside to a coffeehouse to conduct business. Today, the NYSE is located at 11 Wall Street in New York City. It is by far the world’s largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies. #ProgressIsPossible
