On this day in history, February 1st, 1878, Hattie Caraway (1878-1950) was born in Bakersville, Tennessee. Her husband became the U.S. Senator from Arkansas. Following his death in 1931, she filled the remainder of his term, then was elected herself. She served a total of 14 years, thus becoming the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
