On this day in history, July 24th, 1911, the ancient Inca settlement, Macho Picchu, was discovered in Peru. American archeologist Hiram Bingham found the ruins in the rocky countryside near Cuzco. The site stretches an impressive five miles with over 3,000 stone steps. Today, more than 300,000 people visit Machu Picchu every year.
