On September 4th, 1609, the island of Manhattan was discovered by navigator Henry Hudson. 172 years later on the exact same date, Los Angeles was founded by the Spanish Governor of California, Felipe de Neve. The original name was El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles (The Town of the Queen of the Angels).
