Scientists from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are in Guam discussing ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), a renewable technology that uses ocean temperature differences to generate power. Highlighted at the POWER Symposium, OTEC is well-suited for Guam’s tropical waters and could also support seawater air conditioning. While still costly and experimental, experts say it offers stable, around-the-clock energy and could significantly reduce the island’s cooling-related power demand.
