On this day in history, January 16th, 1853, French industrialist Andre Michelin was born in Paris. He started the Michelin Tire Company in 1888, pioneering the use of pneumatic tires on autos. In 1900, André Michelin published the first Michelin Guide, the purpose of which was to promote tourism by car, thereby supporting his tire manufacturing operation. André and his brother Édouard were inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan in 2002.
