On October 30, 1990, for the first time since the Ice Age, Great Britain was connected with the European continent, via a new rail tunnel under the English Channel. The Channel Tunnel, also known as the “Chunnel,” connects Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. The tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles—the largest such transport in the world—and international freight trains.
