This day in history, on April 29th, 1863, American publisher William Randolph Hearst was born in San Francisco. In 1887, he dropped out of Harvard to take control of the failing San Francisco Examiner, which his father had purchased. He saved the Examiner, then went to New York and bought the New York Morning Journal. He expanded into magazine publishing, book, and films, and also served in Congress.
