On this day in history, February 22nd, 1732, George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. An initially loyal British subject, Washington eventually led the Continental Army in the American Revolution and became known as the father of the United States. Washington’s birthday is the origin of our national holiday “President’s Day,’ which was established in 1885 in recognition of the first US President. It is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22—Washington’s actual day of birth—the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers.
