How Bitcoin Can Unlock The Energy Of The Ocean For 1 Billion People

Bitcoin could help unlock 2 to 4 terawatts of continuous clean energy by leveraging Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), a 150-year-old concept that turns the Earth’s oceans into a vast solar battery. OTEC works by using the temperature difference between warm surface water and cold deep seawater to drive a heat engine, generating consistent, renewable electricity. Bitcoin’s ability to monetize stranded energy makes it an ideal partner for scaling OTEC, while the technology’s access to limitless cold water offers an exceptionally efficient and ecological solution for mining. With over a billion people living near tropical coasts, this synergy could provide sustainable power and cooling infrastructure on a planetary scale.

A Renewable Solution To Keep Cool In A Warming World

An alternative cooling method for Bitcoin mining centers, large buildings, airports, hotels, hospitals etc that is not frequently considered, is seawater air-conditioning (SWAC)—a renewable alternative for cooling that involves pumping seawater from ocean depths of around 700 to 1200 meters and temperatures of 3°C to 5°C to the coast, where it exchanges heat with a district cooling system. SWAC uses up to 90% less electricity when compared to conventional air conditioning systems.

Ocean Thermal Energy

The OTEC resource covers an area exceeding 100 million km2 across tropical oceans. Unlike most renewable energy conversion systems, OTEC could deliver power at very high capacity factors and offer baseload capabilities.
